Almost 26,000 guests on the first day of Hala Targowa in Gdańsk

Hala Targowa is back in Gdańsk, and it filled with guests from the very first hours. On 12 August, after 18 months of comprehensive regeneration, the historic building reopened its doors. On the first day alone, the Hall welcomed 25,700 visitors – a result that exceeded the expectations of the Apsys Polska team responsible for the regeneration and reopening of the building.

– “More than 25,000 guests on the first day is the best confirmation for us that Gdańsk had been waiting for Hala Targowa to return. We wanted it to be full of life from the very first moments after opening – for people to want to come here, discover its spaces and offer, meet up and spend time here. And that is exactly what happened. Now our priority is for the Hall to be a place people want to come back to,” says Joanna Tymińska, Director of Hala Targowa.

“All around food”

Hala Targowa was designed as a place centred on food, but with an offer that goes far beyond culinary experiences. The three levels of the historic building house 34 food and retail concepts. Level +1 features 4 restaurants with table service; the ground floor offers 17 street food concepts with a diverse range of cuisines from around the world, as well as two bars; and level -1 houses a delicatessen area with 10 retail units and a bar.

In addition, the ground floor and level -1 feature two stages for cultural and entertainment events.

The Hall’s offer is complemented by two squares on either side of the building. Plac Dominikański (Dominican Square) is a publicly accessible space for relaxing, meeting up, seasonal food trucks and a summer stage. Zielony Rynek (the Green Market) – known to Gdańsk residents for its seasonal fruit and vegetables – will soon return to the north square.

From the outset, the Hall’s concept also envisaged using new technologies to shape its guests’ experience. In September, Ha!Apka will be launched – an app that lets guests order from several of the Hall’s food outlets at the same time. Also from September, the historic vault will become an additional stage for projection mapping shows.

Already today, guests can learn more about the history of the site thanks to an interactive educational and historical panel that tells the story of this part of Gdańsk. Level -1 also houses a museum exhibition referring to the city’s culinary traditions, as well as the exposed relics of a 12th-century Romanesque church.

130 years of history in a new form

The regeneration of Hala Targowa carried out by Apsys Polska was the most extensive in the building’s 130-year history and, at the same time, one of the largest investments of its kind in Pomerania in recent years. The works took 18 months and cost PLN 141 million. Carried out under the supervision of the Regional Conservator of Monuments, they included both restoring the Hall’s historic elements and adapting the building to its new functions.

The steel structure was cleaned, the historic retail kiosks were recreated in their original locations, and the brick pillars were uncovered and put on display. The carefully restored historic elements were complemented by solutions designed specifically for this place, inspired by the character of the Hall and of Gdańsk. The interior design was created by Boris Kudlička with Partners. The building’s technical infrastructure was also completely modernised, including to meet the requirements of modern food service.

Alongside the changes inside the Hall, extensive work was carried out on the building’s exterior. The façade was cleaned and restored, including its pinnacles and historic architectural details. The entrance gates were also renovated, and on the Hall’s first day of operation they were ceremonially opened by representatives of Apsys Polska.

– “For 30 years at Apsys, we have been creating places that are open and rooted in the identity of their cities. Hala Targowa is a project in which this philosophy takes on a special dimension. Our task was to preserve the character of the building and its 130 years of history, while creating a place that meets the needs of Gdańsk’s residents and visitors today. Seeing the Hall full of people on its very first day, we feel that this new chapter has begun exactly as we had dreamed. We believe that this is where the best stories in the city will be written,” emphasises Benoît Charles, CEO of Apsys Polska.
